NUS Save 'Care to Learn' Fund

"The National Union of Students (NUS) today (Friday 3rd Feb) welcomed news from the Young People’s Learning Agency (YPLA) that there will be no changes to the Care to Learn childcare support scheme for teenage parents in further education. The news comes after the scheme was put under review by the Department for Education, who were seeking to reduce its scope for future years.  NUS have been campaigning for the retention of the scheme, which 77% of recipients said was essential in enabling them to attend college, and which reduced the rate of teenage parents who were not in education, employment or training. All but a handful of the recipients were young women. The NUS campaign involved work with a number of partner organisations including the Daycare Trust, Platform 51, the British Youth Council and the University and College Union.

Estelle Hart, NUS National Women’s Officer, said: “Care to Learn is a lifeline to many young parents who are looking to continue their education whilst caring for their children. “When it was put under review there was a great deal of concern that it would be latest victim of cuts which disproportionately affecting young people and women. “NUS made a concerted effort to demonstrate the value of Care to Learn to officials and we’re delighted that the recognise its importance and hope that they will continue to do so in the future.” "

This is great and empowering news for the RHWACA's Better Care to Learn Campaign. Next week a motion will be going through at the RHUL Student Union General meeting for a Student Parents and Carers Representative position to be made on the Student's Union Inclusion and Representation senate. I urge anyone at RHUL who is able to vote, to go along and support this.
