Royal Holloway Women @ Reclaim the Night 2011

Together we are taking a stand against gender-based violence and towards a safer society. A key chant that sums up yesterday evening is “Whatever we wear, wherever we go, yes means yes and no means no”.  Last night was Reclaim the Night, and under the dark November sky we marched, we sang, we chanted through the streets of London to reclaim them as our own.

Since 2004, Reclaim the Night has protested against violence against women, and last night this cause was united with protests against the government cuts as well. It is a women only march, due to women being disproportionately affected by sexual violence. For example, 1 in 20 reported rapes in the UK are never convicted, and there are an estimated 40,000 rapes every year. It is also in support of the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which was on Friday.
Nonetheless, all genders were welcome at the end rally in Camden, where we unified in protest to the coming changes that will shape our future but not for the better. As Kate Smurthwaite, Abortion Rights Spokeperson put it: “No, Mr Cameron, we will not calm down. We will never calm down.”
